On May 6, I head to France to join up with a tour lead by my friend Steve Weiss to follow in the footsteps of the 3rd, 36th and 45th Infantry Divisions, all of which landed in Southern France on 15 August 1944, as Operation Anvil, the second D-Day. Steve, a veteran of the breakout at Anzio, landed with the 36th Division on that day and began an epic journey that would see him stranded behind emeny lines, make a daring escape and fight with the Resistance. This is also where my father fought the war, joining Company G of the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division as a replacement sometime in late October, 1944. The trip is put on by Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours ( http://www.stephenambrosetours.com/tours/champagne-it.html )
